Medical and Pharmaceutical Case History

Zimmer Biomet are global leader in musculoskeletal healthcare.  Their facility in Bridgend manufactures precision hip and knee replacement parts.  They contacted Monk Conveyors to discuss the possibility of a bespoke pneumatic tote lift and airlock system.  Our previous cleanroom experience helped us appreciate the environment the system would be operating in.

The requirements were to bring 15kg tote bins (400x300x200mm) containing precision parts from ground floor up into a cleanroom.  Our double door airlock system was utilised to feed the totes out of the lift and into the cleanroom, while minimising loss of clean air.

The lifter also had the job or returning trays back to low level through the same airlock and using the lift.  The lift therefore had a double level, allowing trays to feed in and out at the same time.

A control system with HMI touchscreen allowed operators to see fault message, manually control the system, and open doors for cleaning.  Cleanliness and operator safety were the highest priority for the system.

The system saved operatives continually moving product out of the cleanroom on trolleys.  It therefore saved manpower and maintained a continual flow of work in and out of the cleanroom.  The system was also design to take up a minimal amount of floor space.

The project included full mechanical and electrical installations, followed by training and handover to the customer.
